One to skip, one to get

March 3, 2008

Slim picking at the RedBox this week, but a nice guy behind me in line looking over my shoulder (I hate that) noticed that I was looking at the description for “The Invasion” and said it was good. It looked like it had a 50/50 chance at being decent, and though I’m not sure I would trust the guy’s judgment, I made that my selection.

I take a moment to get the other review out of the way – “I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry”, staring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. I like both these guys, but we maxed out at 3 gay jokes and turned it off. Terrible and boring – skip it.

So now our Feature Presentation.

The Invasion”, staring Nichole Kidman and Daniel Craig, is based on the classic story of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (either 1954, or 1978), although it skips the pod stuff and rather goes for a super virus thingy that attaches itself to the space shuttle for a crash landing. Upon reaching earth, it infects, and then when people go to sleep, it takes over. The trick here – don’t fall asleep. When people wake up, they look the same, they feel the same, but show no emotion and want everyone else to be the same way. Pretty cool and creepy, and they move and attack a little like zombies, other than when they catch you they don’t bite, they barf on you. (Luckily there weren’t too many scenes of that.) I wonder how much they had to pay Nichole for that?

Social commentary is blatant, maybe you shouldn’t wish for a world with peace and no conflicts whatsoever. Movie was good, acting was fine, it is worth a rental for sure. Check it out.

“Gladiators ready!!!!!”

January 7, 2008

Ah yeeeeeaaahhhhh!!!! American Gladiators came back to network television last night, with it’s grand debut on NBC. (I’m going to assume that if you are reading this you know what American Gladiators is, if not, you prolly won’t get it anyway.) The Gladiators are as big and cheesy as ever, and there is one for whatever your taste. Returning are all your favorite events like Joust, Pyramid, and PowerBall, and they have added some new events as well, though they aren’t quite as good. Pairs of contestants battle through 4 events against the resident Gladiators to rack up points, and then the leader is given a 1/2 second per point differential advantage going into the final Eliminator obstacle course. Gotta say - the Eliminator is longer and tougher than it was originally and contestants were lucky to even finish the thing. Made for some good races. Oh and did I mention that the show is hosted by none other than Hulk Hogan?!?! Can’t get much better than that. (Besides, he prolly needs a job now that he is split from his wife and kids…)

Last nights highlight was the dude that was doing the “Bull Dance” after winning the joust. LOL!!! Tune in tonight for episode 2. (I suggest watching it via DVR - the interviews can get a bit tiring.) :)

Year end lists and my favorite album of the year

December 28, 2007

Had enough of the “Best and Worst” lists that are everywhere? If you haven’t checked it out yet, I point you to Carla’s posting over on Our Lady of Perpetual Hell of the Top 10 songs from myself, Carla, Aaron, and Chris. She has done a bang up job on the posting and there are some great tracks over there.

My list included a track from Mark Ronson’sVersion” that was released earlier this year. The album is my favorite of the year and features the vocal talents of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and others on new versions of songs. I’ve included the album in its entirety for your enjoyment!!
